Motivation for this project.

The diversity values are calculated by going through the number of unique food venues in each zip code. As the number of unique food venues in a zip code increases the diversity index, also known as the Shannon index, increases.
The normalized entropy values, also known as equitability values, are the diversity values divided by the natural log of the number of food venues in each county. As this ratio approaches a value of one the diversity of food venues in a zip code is maximized at a value of one.
How all of these maps were generated are posted in this article.
All of the food venue diversity data was calculated using this script and the 2011 business list for California.
